The European Union is considering strengthening its eastern borders with the creation of a “drone wall“, a proposal presented by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The measure aims to enhance security against threats coming from Russia, with constant aerial patrols by drones and integration into a satellite-based ground monitoring system. The idea arises amid increasing tensions, recently marked by the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace.

The project has the support of countries such as Poland, Estonia, and Lithuania, which had already been pressing for investments in border protection. Part of the resources from the European SAFE program will be allocated to the initiative, with the possibility of acquiring reconnaissance, combat, and air defense drones even outside the European Economic Area, including Ukrainian suppliers. Poland received the largest allocation, amounting to $51.4 billion, while the Baltic states totaled around $17.3 billion.

At the same time, these nations are advancing their own defense projects. Poland is developing the so-called “Eastern Shield,” with fortifications, bases, and infrastructure aimed at the rapid mobilization of troops. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are working on the construction of the Baltic Defense Line, which envisions hundreds of bunkers and strategic barriers by 2025.

Both projects combine physical obstacles with modern surveillance resources, consolidating a joint protection strategy in Eastern Europe.
